"Hello?" Kate said sleepily into the ringing phone.
"Who the hell is this?" a drunken voice slurred. Kate sat up and glanced at Gibbs. He was fast asleep, a small smile on his face. Kate threw on her robe and padded out of the room.
"I'm Jethro's girlfriend. Who the hell are you?" Kate snapped back as she closed the door. It still sounded odd to call him Jethro.
"I'm Robyn. His wife," the voice snarled. "Put Jethro on the phone."
"And why should I do that?" Kate replied. The tone of derision in the other woman's voice pissed her off. No one made Kate Todd feel inferior.
"Because I want to talk to him. He never calls me, and I want to know why."
Kate's eyes narrowed. "That could be because you two are divorced. Why is that, by the way? Oh, yeah--you abused him."
Robyn laughed. "I abused him?"
"Yes, you did." Kate breathed deeply, trying not to lose her temper. "Taking a baseball bat to someone is not exactly a message of love."
"He deserved it."
"Excuse me?" Kate raised her voice. She winced at the volume and peeked into the bedroom. Gibbs stirred, but did not awaken. "Excuse me?" she repeated, her voice lower. "No one deserves that. Don't you ever call here again."
"And why should I listen to Jethro's little slut, huh?" Robyn hissed.
Through clenched teeth, Kate said, "Because 'Jethro's little slut' owns a gun. And she will not hesitate to hunt you down like the bitch you are if you ever--ever--contact him again. I promise you that."
"Are you threatening me?" the other woman said incredulously.
"Why, yes, I do believe I am," Kate replied, grinning viciously. "Now why don't you go lose this number? Oh, and while you're at it, sober up." She pressed the off button. It wasn't as satisfying as slamming the phone down would have been, but it would have to do.
Kate opened the bedroom door and crept toward the bed. She slipped her robe off and slid into the bed. She replaced the phone in the cradle and rolled over. Gibbs watched her, rubbing his gorgeous blue eyes.
"Who was that?" he asked in a voice still rough from sleep.
"Wrong number." She wrapped her arms around him and snuggled into his warmth. She buried her face in his chest, hiding a look of mixed anger and protectiveness. If that woman ever called again, she would find out that Caitlin Todd always kept her promises.
