Um. Isn't it good for kids to drink milk? Why would someone want them to stop drinking milk? It's better than drinks that are little better than sugar, dye, and water.

in moderation, yes. But milk does contain (natural) sugar and/or gets broken down into sugar inside your mouth pretty quickly. So cavities are still an issue.

But really, tons and tons and tons better than most other stuff.
I am actually disgusted everytime I see a label of something or other for children. Seriously. Why are they trying to poison them?
And most of that stuff is seriously disgusting.

I get that, but if the children are going to get the sugar anyway, they might as well get the calcium from drinking milk. A friend was here today and telling us how she's glad she's gotten one of her daughters down to one glass of milk a day instead of her drinking it all the time. Yet the kid was sitting not five feet away, drinking one of those sugar water drinks that have no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Maybe it's just me, but if you're going to take the milk away, at least give the kid some juice or something--something, I don't know, nutritious.

(Damn. I never should've taken that nutrition class last year. Now I'm getting all ranty. *grin*)

There is actually such a thing as ODing on calcium.
I hear renal demage and deposits in places in your body where it isn't supposed to be are one of the effects. Though that's really difficult for an adult (they'd have to take four times the recoomaned dosage of those supplement pills. Which usually contain way too much of anything to begin with. And are fairly ineffective anyway, but that's another rant.)
Look here For an article on children drinking too much milk.

But colored sugar water really isn't the way to go.
Even pure juice has too much sugar.
Juice with a lot of water (1:3-1:5 or more), unsweetened tea.
Or just plain good old water.

In the UK I watched a programm for a while that looked at a family's kids. Tested them, not just nutrition but also reaction, concentration, social skills, etc. And then they took that data and projected what these kids might look like when they're 40, 50, 60, 70... What kind of diseases they're likedly to suffer from.
A lot of them barely made it to 60.
Even kids that looked 'normal' were suffering from mal nutrition because all they were eating was basically sugar and junk food. Some of them had up to 8 times the RDA for sugar.
Of course then went on changing the bad habbits. They program was rather dramatically entitled 'honey, we're killing the kids' or something like that.

(the saddest thing was probably an eight year old who was smoking. I stole the cigaretts from his mother or smoked the rest of a cigarette butt).
