Today in World Religions, we watched a movie. This is not an infrequent occurrence (not that I'm complaining or anything!).

So this guy, Ron something-or-other, made a series of movies in the 1970s about different religions. So far, we've watched the ones on Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Roman Catholicism. Today's movie was about Protestantism.

It was the first one of these movies that made me go, "THE BATSHIT. IT BURNS." (Not like that, of course--I mean, I was still in class.)

Twenty minutes of the movie focused on fundamentalist Christianity. For the full twenty minutes, I sat there with my jaw dropped, amazed at the utter crazy talk.

The best part (as in the part that made me laugh the hardest from sheer disbelief) were the two songs that two girls sang. In summary, they said this:

Song #1: I don't know about you, buddy, but I'm not descended from monkeys.
Song #2: The ecumenical movement is evil and would welcome Satan. Screw you people, you're all going to hell.

No, really. I'll have to see if I can get the video from the library to get the actual lyrics.

This icon has never seemed more appropriate.

I say this with the greatest respect (all things being equal of course), but I always thought that the Jehovah's Witnesses were the crackpots of monotheism.

I guess I can't say Christianity, because they aren't.

Anyways, my views have changed on that.

It's sounds like an interesting film to watch when you're drunk, stoned, or preferably both, with a big bowl of popcorn. We can sing Kumbayah too.

Well, Jehovah's Witnesses are Christians. I'd actually include them with fundamentalist (evangelical) Christians, though I'm sure both groups would disagree with that. :-)

I've actually attended Sunday meetings at a Kingdom Hall (what Witnesses call their place of worship). It seems very sane, until you actually listen to what they're, you know, saying.

Or if we stay sober and just watch the movie with a big bowl of popcorn and sit and mock the crackpots - because mocking is the best part of watching a crappy movie! :)

I grew up with these sorts of people and in that type of culture. I don't think I need to explain why I currently identify as agnostic.
