The tall, slim, brunette woman walked through the foyer of the hotel. She kept her eyes, which were framed by sunglasses, straight ahead. The heels of her open-toed sandals clicked against the tiled floor.
She approached the desk. The desk clerk smiled at the woman.
“Good evening, Ms. Roberts. Your room is ready for you. Here is your key.” She slid an envelope across the desk.
The woman removed a key and slip of paper. She returned the envelope with a mysterious smile, and walked off without a word.
The clerk shook her head. She knew that the woman was using an alias. She also knew that what the woman was doing could get her in serious trouble. However, she was paid well, and business thrived on how well the hotel's staff could keep secrets. Pocketing the envelope, she turned to the next customer.
The next morning, the same clerk was staffing the front desk when the woman came stalking out of the elevator. She had forgotten her sunglasses, and her eyes were puffy and bloodshot.
“Good morning, madam,” she ventured. She was surprised to see tears rolling down the woman's face.
Suddenly, the doors to the elevators opened again. “Sarah! Please, wait!”
The woman turned around. “What do you want, damn you? To screw with my mind some more? No, it's not even my mind that you want to screw with, is it?”
“Damn it, woman, will you let me speak?”
“You've said all you need to say. Now leave me alone and let me get on with my life.”
“Listen to me.”
“Sarah...” The bald man reached for the woman.
“You don't want me! Why do you keep stringing me along like this? Do you have any idea how much this hurts? I want a life with the man I love. I don't want to hide away from the world. I'm not ashamed of loving you, AJ.”
“I know that, Sarah; I love you so much.”
The woman gasped slightly. “You... you what?”
“You heard me. I love you. And I don't want to hide our relationship from our friends, either. But I also don't want to spend the rest of my life in prison. Please, Sarah... we need to think about this.”
“Yes, we do. But you don't want to think about it. You've always been content with our little trysts.”
The man, who had been holding onto his patience by a thread, snapped, “You don't think I want a family of my own? That I don't want to shout from the rooftops that I love you? I thank God every day that you return my feelings, Sarah. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. But I can't do that if I'm doing time in Leavenworth.”
The woman's eyes shone with tears... and something else. “Say that again.”
“What? That I don't want to do time in Leavenworth?” The man looked confused.
“No... before that.”
He furrowed his brow in confusion--then smiled softly. “Oh, you mean that I want to spend the rest of my life with you? That I want to see your face when I wake in the mornings, to eat meals with you, to sit and watch the sun set with you in my arms? That I want to hear your beautiful voice pledge yourself to me, so feel our child kick in your belly? That I--"
The woman cut him off, throwing herself into his arms. “Oh, AJ!” she sobbed.
“Sarah,” the man whispered huskily. “Sarah... we should probably go now. We have an audience.”
“Fine. Come on.”
The man grinned evilly. “I plan to.”
She smacked his arm, giggling. “Beast.”
Oh, and in case you were wondering, the word was "alias".
