NCIS ep title ramble

I just went off on a complete tangent on the KateAriFic Yahoo group about the titles of two NCIS episodes.

I don't know; maybe I'm just slow. I just made the connection in my mind about the titles of the two Ari eps, "Bete Noire" and "Reveille".

Bete Noire = Nightmare. (Okay, so technically it's "black beast", something hated or despised, but let's go with the writers' definition here.)

Reveille = Awakening. (Again, not actual definition, but close enough.)

I didn't realize they were so clever. Huh.

Well, Awakening is the actual definition of Reveille... Except that normally it's just Reveil. Without the "le" at the end.
And, yeah, Nightmare is Cauchemar, not Bête Noire...

Really? Shows how much French I know. Which is exactly none. (I was going with the m-w.com definition. Though now that I look at the etymology, it's obvious.)

Oh, well, I didn't thought of it, but, yeah, a Réveil can also be an alarm clock. But we generally add "matin" to it (Réveil-matin). Matin meaning morning. So, yeah. Little french course. lol ;)

Bete Noire is more of a...thing that won't stop bothering you. It's really hard to translate. Literally, it means "black beast."

Reveille is the anglicization of reveil, probably from the verb for "to wake up," se reveiller. It's a military term as well as I'm sure you know, only pronounced "re-vuh-lee."
